Double-pointed needles would count as circular needles for these instructions. For garter stitch on DPs, knit 1 round and purl 1 round, alternating as you go up. For stockinette stitch on DPs, knit every row.
On circular or DP needles, the instructions for st st and garter are reversed, as you may've noticed. Fun, hm? On DPs or circulars, the stockinette is the one with no purling.
I have to travel to Texas for a complimentary two-week stay of my good friends in Dallas that he wanted the experience of the Lone Star State. The reason I suggest videos instead of books only in the videos you can see how to hold the yarn and hook as well as any other measure necessary to do certain stitches.
I've found YouTube to be a great resource in the search for these videos. Simply type in "crochet" or "blanket crochet" in the search bar and you'll find plenty of how-to videos.
You can also go to Google and type the word "crochet videos" or "crochet baby blanket videos" to show a lot of results.
Of course, there are many different models of baby blankets and Afghans. Each pattern has different points needed to learn, if you do not already know. Most often the patterns are instructions for the basics and more advanced points. If you are new to crochet, I suggest you start with a model very basic. I found very easy to follow patterns are granny squares or ripples.

Can someone suggest some UK web pages where i can buy either individual patterns or pattern books for crocheted clothing for children.
Have been to free sites,,,, but i need hard copies, as i wont always be able to use the PC, and havent the time to write them out by hand.
Would prefer English patterns to American, ones as they have different stitches and are confusing.
There are lots of free patterns on the Internet. The ones on blogs can usually be copied (copy-and-paste) and pasted into a word processing document. Once you have a copy in a word processing document, you can go into the pattern and add notes giving the "translation" of a term. Then print the pattern from your word processing program. The patterns at yarn manufacturers' sites are typically in PDF format. Your computer does need to have a program that reads PDF files such as Adobe Acrobat Reader or Cool Reader for PDF http://www.pdf2exe.com/reader.html (it's free). When you print the pattern, you can add whatever notes you want to add about hook sizes, stitch names, and so on.
Actually, the stitches are the same, they just go by different names. What I (in the US) call a "single crochet," you (in the UK) would call a "double crochet." What I call a "double crochet," you call a "treble crochet." I certainly understand your frustration. In a lengthy search of the Internet for UK yarn companies with crochet patterns for kids, I came up very short. There were even links on UK sites to the US sites with free patterns! I found lots of knitting patterns, though. If I were in your place, I'd be using the US sites and marking up my downloaded/printed copies with the UK names for the hook sizes and stitches.

There are not many color photos with the costumes, though some have simple diagrams. Some have links to web sites to show the idea. Since you will be doing most of the costumes of the items you already have or can easily get, your costume will have its own unique style. Reading these pages of costumes, I felt like I was listening to my mom and sisters out my costume this year.
There are over 90 different costumes listed in alphabetical order with a table of contents. People ranging from characters to objects, a play on words and animals and occupations, and more. I just read Table of contents for your children and you're on your way to a happy Halloween.
The costumes are very child friendly and safe. Many are based on a sweatshirt and pants or leggings. They use simple supplies like cardboard boxes, and basic art supplies including paint, pompoms and pipe cleaners. One of the innovations of high technology I like is the way that suggest taking a card with the copy center and having burned to the size of the plane to make a Queen of Hearts costume. This technique used in some ideas and it only costs a few dollars. If that is not available to you, do suggest alternatives.

I'm new to crochet in that i have only made a standard row scarf! I have bought a pattern online which is just written out and is not making sense to me
1. With brown, ch 4, 15 dc in fourth ch from hook, sl st in top of ch 4 to join
2. Ch 3, dc 1 in same st, {dc 1, 2 dc} seven times, dc 1, sl st to join (24 total)
3. Ch 3, dc 1, {2 dc, dc 2} seven times, 2 dc, sl st to join (32 total)
4. Ch 3, dc 14, ch 3, turn
5. Repeat round 4 (19, 29, 39, 49) times, don’t ch 3, turn, or fasten off after the (19, 29, 39, 49) repetition
I have managed to do 1 which has produced a circle I have CH 3 how do i then dc 1 into the same stitch and what is the bracket info mean.
Maybe this is beyond my basic skills!!!

They mean the same stitch you just put the slip stitch into when you closed the circle.
The pattern is not correctly written but what they want you to do next is put one double crochet in the next stitch and two in the stitch after that. Then one, then two, and so on around (ie 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2...). (16 original stitches + 8 increases gets their 24 sts)
Its the {} notation that is goofy (non-standard) What they mean the second time is put 2 dc in the first stitch, then one in each of the next two stiches, then two in the next one and so on all the way around (ie 2, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1....). (24 stitches + 8 increases = 32 stitch total)
If you want to use other Crochet usual, might want to try wire crochet. You already know how to make a double crochet stitch or chain stitch what can master this type of Crochet. The chain stitch is the base of the cable and, in general it takes about five rows that are repeated.
