Trying to knit- what does it mean by 44 oz?
Forgive me for asking a silly question, but I'm new to the whole knitting thing. I'm trying to learn how to knit a blanket and under Materials, it says: "Worsted Weight Yarn: 44 ounces, (1250 grams, 3015 yards). 29" circular knitting needles, size 17 (12.75mm) or size needed for gauge."
Also, there is a note that says, "Afghan is worked holding two strands of yarn together."
1) Does 44 oz. mean the total number of ounces I need in yarn? So, in other words, my skein says it weighs 7 oz. Does that mean I need 7 skeins to knit with? I'm really confused about this. I went to the yarn store, and it's not like they sell 3 pound yarn...
2) What does it mean by "holding 2 strands of yarn together"? Do I literally just double up on my yarn? After all, it seems like standard "medium" worsted yarn is too small for a size 17 needle.
I'm really confused and could use any help that I can get. Thanks!
1) Yes. You do need 7 skeins of yarn. And actually they do sell 1 pound yarn, although they usually only come in acrylic, and in limited colors. My best friend used this yarn to knit her fiance a blanket for his twin bed last year, so it can be done.
2) Yes you do literally double up on your yarn. The best way to do this is to find both ends of your skein. There's one on the outside, and one in the middle. You need to reach inside the skein and carefully pull out the insides and find the end of the yarn. Pull this out and hold it alongside the end on the outside--you can either work to straighten everything out so they're even, or just cut them with scissors so they're even. This way the strand you're knitting with is twice as thick as it originally would have been, which is optimal for afghans.
