I cant understand this in my knitting pattern K76, yf, sl1,yb, turn. Can anyone help?
I am making a toy cat and have come across this row in my pattern K76, yf, sl1, yb, turn.
The next row is Sl1, p60, yb, sl1,yf, turn.
The pattern carries on this way. The row before these had 92 stitches so I assume that the extra stitches will stay on the needle? Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks!...should I slip the stitches knitways or purlways as it doesnt say. Is it knitways on a k row and purlways on a p row?
You're doing short rows. There are several different ways to do them, these instructions are calling for "wrapped" short rows. That means at the end of your row (which is going to end in the middle somewhere of the previous row), you're going to wrap the yarn around a stitch before heading back. That wrap will anchor the yarn end to prevent a hole in your work. The instructions sound complicated, but that's all you're really doing: wrapping your working yarn around the base of the first stitch you aren't going to actually knit.
Nona has the best tutorial on short rows: http://nonaknits.typepad.com/nonaknits/2005/04/wrapped_stitch_.html
I don't know what the one answer's deal is about insisting everyone has to take a formal knitting class. I certainly never did. I was self-taught and now I TEACH those formal knitting classes. I don't care how my students learn. Each needs to learn how ever it works for them. Some do better in a class with an instructor, some do better with a book and others with videos. No two knitting instructors teach their classes the same, or cover the same things. And there are no hard and fast "always" rules in knitting. When you wrap a stitch, you slip it purl-wise because you don't want to change the orientation of the stitch on the needle, you just want to move it out of the way so you can wrap the yarn around it. Will it be the end of the world if you slip it knit-wise by accident? No. If you were taught to knit the leading leg (as I teach my students), then it will turn out exactly the same whichever way you slipped the stitch. If you don't knit the leading leg, it will barely be noticeable unless you look really closely. So it's not worth making a hard and fast rule over.
30+ years later, after teaching myself to knit from a 50 cent booklet from the craft store, I continue to learn new skills and techniques. I learn them however I find them, in books, in magazines, on the internet, at seminars and clinics, in classes, by trial and error, and peering over the shoulders of other knitters just to see what they're doing that might be interesting. That's where I learn the most these days, either looking at what others are doing, or randomly browsing YouTube for some esoteric technique like Norwegian purling and accidentally finding a nifty variation of the Italian cast-on totally unexpectedly.
Books are wonderful resources and your library probably has some lovely ones on knitting. I never saw "how to knit a boat" covered in a class, but it's in Debbie New's "Unexpected Knitting," sure enough. They show it being paddled around on a pond and everything, with a real human riding in, of all things, a hand knit boat that floats.
